Chapter Three

Ifelt guilty as morning came, and I realised that we’d lost track of time, staying up all night.

“Are you sure you’re up to doing the ritual again?” I asked as we got dressed. “You need rest. And food.”

Dana smiled as she shook her head. “Can’t you feel my rune, Poppy? It’s practically buzzing with magic. I think I could survive off that alone for the next week.”

“Even if that’s true, it’s possibly not something we should test...”

She sighed as she finished pulling on her shirt and turned to face me, my own shirt still in my hand. “Trust me, I feel better than fine. And it won’t matter if I won’t be able to lower my mental barriers anyway...”

I placed my hands on her arms, stopping her from folding them. “You managed to lower your barriers just fine last night.”

“Yeah, with you. I don’t trust Nomad as much as I trust you.”

“I mean, think of it this way, once we find Viktor, you never have to see Nomad again if you don’t want to.”

“That’s assuming Viktor won’t want to see him.”

“Noah and I can keep an eye on the two of them. I promise, we’ll make it work.”

She took a deep breath before nodding. “Okay, you’re right. Thank you. That does really help.”

As soon as we were dressed, we headed downstairs. Despite what Dana thought, I figured I could use some food, and maybe a nap, but Noah was practically vibrating with anxiety in my mind, so I figured that getting to Viktor had to be the priority and if I passed out by overextending myself, the others could be in charge of getting me home.

Noah took a moment to be unimpressed by my glib attitude, but then he realised that, no matter how unimpressed he was, I still had a point, and he still couldn’t stomach making the sensible decision to wait for me to eat before we left.

Of course, between his nausea and mine, I wasn’t exactly hungry anymore, so I followed Dana without hesitation, soon arriving in the room she and Damon had tried the ritual in the day before.

Damon was already waiting there for us, and immediately turned to Dana with an apologetic look.

“Dana... I assume Poppy told you what I said to her yesterday, but I’ll repeat it myself now. I’m sorry, I was holding back yesterday to protect my secrets and that put your brother’s life in danger. I promise, if we try again now, I won’t hold back.”

Dana didn’t seem convinced as she shook her head. “I appreciate you saying that, but... It’s one thing to say it, and another to do it. You don’t know me, how can you trust me?”

“And how can you trust me? Still, it is your brother who will suffer if we don’t figure out a way.” He sighed, placing his hands on his hips. “I did consider... Perhaps we should make a promise spell, binding us so that we cannot turn against each other, or our loved ones.
